Set in the 1930s during Stalin's famine in Ukraine, the film follows a young mother Darka whose husband was imprisoned in Siberia. Unable to find any food for her newborn, Darka faces a choice: remaining at home with her dying kid or leaving to participate in her friend's audacious food exchange plan.
